Ireland Boy Baby Names

This is a list of Irish baby names from Ireland and concentrates on Irish boy names and their meanings. Due to their Gaelic and Celtic origins, Irish boy names have a unique and slightly mysterious quality. Other gaelic boy names can be found on a seperate page as can Irish girl names. I have made NO distinction between Northern and Southern Irish names. Of course they are mainly first names but there are some Ireland family or Irish surnames also.

In respect of Irish naming conventions, their is a certain Western european historical element with the naming convention being:

  1. The 1st son was usually named after the father's father
  2. The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father
  3. The 3rd son was usually named after the father
  4. The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother
  5. The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother
Irish popular names (on our sister site) reflects this naming convention and has done for some considerable time.
